Cryptobiosphere transforms the winter landscapes of Hokkaido into an unknown contact zone. Photographs and field records become fragments of a speculative archive recovered in 2189, where snow and ice act as sensing media, continually recording, erasing, and rewriting their surfaces.

Created by UK-based multimedia artist Zoetica Ebb in collaboration with Japanese writer Kenji Siratori, this bilingual English/Japanese artist’s book extends Ebb’s Alien Botany series into an ecology of latency, signal, and parallel duration. Here, cryostasis is an active state: a condition that stores pressure and preserves disturbances, awaiting the next transformation.

Ebb’s photography, English text, and nonhuman field notes are interwoven with Siratori’s Cryptobiosphere signal dialogue and Japanese translation. These elements move through the book at different rhythms and densities.

Five translucent foldouts introduce fragmented words, signs, and cartographic traces that can be layered across different photographs and passages, creating thousands of possible configurations. Images are recontextualised, sentences mutate, and new alignments emerge.

Combining speculative research, xenopoetics, and material experimentation, Cryptobiosphere behaves like the environment it describes: layered, responsive, and continually remade.

A book as a physical system

The 144-page book is constructed from alternating opaque and translucent papers, with five double-width foldouts that extend beyond the conventional page. Printed and assembled in Latvia, its complex structure requires substantial manual craftsmanship. An open-spine binding and a debossed cover complete the physical edition.

『Cryptobiosphere(暗号生物圏)』は、冬の北海道の風景を未知の接触領域へと変貌させる。
